Center for Archaeological Data and Information was established on the basis of the library of the Institute of Archaeology in 1996. It consists of a library, a museum and a department of data and information. It has 12 staffs, including one research fellow, four associate research fellows, six librarians, and one librarian assistant. 

    

Library

     Its predecessor was the library of the Institute of History of Peking Academy. Over the past six decades, the holdings have grown to include more than 300,000 books and almost 100 periodicals. Most of the holdings are archaeology and epigraphy literatures. In addition, there are also some holdings in ancient history, history of sciences, history of economy, art history, transportation history, local history, relevant reference books, ethnology and anthropology. The library maintains regular exchange programs with more than seventy foreign institutions in United States, Japan, Britain, France, German, Sweden and other countries. Its collections of both Chinese and foreign archaeology and antiquity literatures are the richest among all the archaeology libraries in China. 

 

Museum

     The collections of the museum consist of the selected artifacts and other kinds of samples excavated by the Institute of Archaeology over the past five decades. The museum has a main gallery is in Beijing and three branch galleries located respectively in Anyang, Luoyang and Xi’an. The Beijing main gallery features almost 3000 celebrated objects ranging from Palaeolithic period up to the Ming Dynasty. In addition, it also displays some foreign objects either exchanged with or given as gifts from foreign institutions. The museum developed several traveling exhibits for United States, Japan and Europe.  Traveling exhibits such as “Birth of Chinese Dynasties”,  “Chinese Cultures Encountered by Visitors to the Tang Dynasty”, and “The Prosperous Han Dynasty” were all well received in overseas.

    

The website of Chinese Archaeology

     The Chinese-English bilingual archaeology website is the only website on Chinese archaeology, which covers the newest and most important archaeological discoveries, latest academic activities, newest research developments, as well as some archaeological data and publication information. The professional website not only serves for relative scholars but suitable for public to learn Chinese archaeology, ancient culture and Chinese civilization. It is visited widely by people all over the world and strongly improves the academic communication and disciplinary development of archaeology.

 

Department of Data and Information

     This department collects the update Chinese archaeological data and information, including research news, special research results, important archaeological discoveries, academic news, data of ancient epigraphy and the catalogue of archaeology literatures. It is in charge of editing Chinese Archaeology Annals and further developing the archaeological resources. It has published eighteen volumes of Encyclopedia of the Bronze Inscriptions of Shang and Zhou, fourteen volumes of Chinese Archaeology Annals (1984-1997),  three volumes of Catalogue of  Chinese Archaeology Literature (1949-1966), (1973-1982), (1983-1990), and Guide for Chinese Ceramic Literatures.  It also produced a CD of Celebrated Chinese Antiquities.  In addition, it also edited the internal references such as Archaeology References (Volumes 1-9), Newsletter of Archaeology Information (Volumes 1-14). In the near future, the department will publish Collection of Xia Nai’s Essays, Guide for Ancient Architecture Literatures of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.  It is also in the process to develop Database for the Table of Contents of Chinese Archaeological Literatures and Database for Celebrated Antiquities, and will make them accessible on the internet.
