The Archaeology Press was founded in 1997. Its predecessor was the Editorial Office of Archaeology, a press department in charge of editing periodicals and books in the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences since 1955. Mengjia CHEN, Zhongshu WANG, Zhimin An, Zhaoyin LU, Xun LIU, Mingrong WEN and Yunxiang BAI served as its directors at different times. Currently, the Archaeology Press has four departments: Department of Archaeology (Kaogu), Department of Journal of Archaeology (Kaogu xuebao), Department of Archaeology Series and Comprehensive Department. There are fourteen full-time staff, two adjunct staff and five part-time staff. The full-time staff includes three editors, five associate editors, four assistant editors and two assistants.
The Archaeology Press is mainly in charge of editing, publishing, distributing and managing Archaeology (Kaogu, monthly journal), Journal of Archaeology (Kaogu xuebao, quarterly journal). It also edits Archaeology Periodicals (Kaogu xue jikan, occasional periodical) and series of archaeology.
Archaeology (Kaogu)
This monthly periodical was founded in 1955. Until 2005, it had published 448 volumes. As a professional journal of archaeology, Archaeology presents mainly reports of archaeological surveys, short report of archaeological excavations and archaeological research papers. In addition, it also publishes experiment reports and research papers of scientific archaeology, important research news and book reviews. Its high standard in science, academia and information has been well recognized by researchers throughout the world. It is the best core journal of Chinese archaeology. In 1995, it was awarded as the Excellent Social Science Research and Theory Periodical in China. In 1998, it was selected as one of a hundred important social science periodicals in China. In 1999, it was awarded as the Excellent Periodical of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. More than 20 countries and regions subscribe to this journal. It has long led the overseas distributions among all Chinese periodicals.
Journal of Archaeology (Kaogu xuebao)
This quarterly periodical was founded in 1936. Until 2005, it had published 156 volumes. This is the only comprehensive academic journal of Chinese archaeology, presenting mainly medium-sized archaeological reports, archaeology research papers, ancient history research papers, reports and research papers of scientific archaeology and other important papers related to archaeology. It is one of the core periodicals of Chinese archaeology.
Archaeology Periodicals (Kaogu xue jikan)
This occasional journal was founded in 1981. Until June 2005, it has published 15 volumes. It publishes mainly long field archaeological reports, archaeological research papers, experimental reports and research papers of scientific archaeology, and other long research papers, data reports related to archaeology.
Chinese Archaeology Series
The Chinese archaeology series were first founded in 1952. As national publications, this series publishes four types of literatures. Type I is research books, and 26 were published till June 2000. Type II is data publications, and 33 were published till June 2000. Type III is comprehensive publications, and 4 were published till June 2000. Type IV is field archaeology report, and 59 were published till June 2000. Many of these publications received national or provincial awards.
The Archaeology Press is committed to the policy of managing the publications by scholars. In addition to editing and publishing these world-renowned journals and books, the staff are also undertaking research projects and educating graduate students. We have promoted many renowned scholars and produced a considerable number of high level research results. The ongoing research projects include: Study of Shang and Zhou Bronzes, Study of Ancient Writing, Study of the Archaeology of Astronomy, Archaeological Study of Ancient Tools, Archaeological Study of Qin, Han, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Study of Ancient Jades, and Study of Ancient Seals.
