Zhu Yanshi

      Professor Zhu Yanshi

      Born in Beijing in August, 1962. Doctorate in History. Research Fellow, Director of the Research Department of Han to Tang Archaeology and Team Leader of the Yecheng City Archaeological Team at the CASS Institute of Archaeology.
     Zhu Yanshi graduated from Peking University's Department of Archaeology in August 1984 with a BA in History. Later that year, he held successive posts as a research intern and research assistant at the CASS Institute of Archaeology's Research Department of Han to Tang Archaeology. He studied abroad in Japan at Waseda University's Department of Archaeology from 1995 to 1997. He went on to study at Kokugakuin University's Graduate School in Japan, where he earned his Doctorate in History. From 1998 to 1999, he was a post-doctoral research fellow at the Tokyo National Museum. Zhu Yanshi has held the position of visiting research fellow at Waseda University's Silk Road Research Institute since 2000 and was appointed visiting professor at the Tohoku Gakuin University in 2005.
     He currently holds the positions of Professor at the CASS Graduate School's Department of Archaeology, visiting research fellow at the Peking University's Centre for the Study of Chinese Archaeology, visiting professor at the School of Ethnology and Sociology at the Central University of Nationalities of China, and is a council member of the Chinese Society of Archaeology.

Key Research Work
   Professor Zhu Yanshi has participated in or presided over the survey and excavation of several sites, including the Yan State noble cemetery at the Liuli River site in Beijing, the Yecheng City site in Hebei Province's Linzhang County, the Cizhou kiln in Cixian County, the Cixian County tomb clusters and Wanzhang mural tombs of the Northern Dynasties period, and the Southern Song imperial palace in Lin'an, Hangzhou. He also participated in excavation and survey projects in Japan, including the ruins at the Toshima Banbai site and a shell mound at Kami-Nakazato in Tokyo's Kita-Ku ward.
    He presided over the excavation of the ruins of a Eastern Wei-Northern Qi era Buddhist temple at Yecheng City dating from the rule of the Zhao King Pengcheng, which was named one of China's ten greatest archaelogical discoveries of 2002. He also presided over the excavation of the Eastern Wei imperial tomb of Yuan Hu dating from the Northern Dynasties period in Cixian County, which was named one of China's ten greatest archaeological discoveries of 2007, and the excavations of the M63 and M003 of the Northern Dynasty tomb clusters in Cixian County, which was awarded second prize in the National Field Archaeology Awards.
    He is currently presiding over the survey and excavation of the Yecheng City site.
