Capital of Jin Dynasty unearthed in Beijing

The capital of the ancient Jin Dynasty, which slept underneath modern Beijing for nearly 1,000 years, was unearthed recently in the city.

Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics explored and excavated the Lize Business Planning Area starting this April, and now they have discovered three large-scale ruins. The ruins are rare and it is estimated that the extent of them is vast, according to Wang Yuwei, an official of the bureau.

In the process of excavation, they have unearthed some cultural relics and construction materials with typical characteristics of the Jin dynasty. In addition, they also have found seven ancient tombs belonging to the Tang, Liao and Qing dynasties.

The Jin Dynasty settlement marked the start of Beijing's long history as a capital city. Hence, many scholars are interested in learning about what Beijing was like during that period. The excavation of the Jin capital will provide important materials for reexamining Beijing's history.
