IN   FOCUS

Central Plain, Central State, Central Nation, Where China Originated
The Central Plains, generally referring to the confluence area of the midstream and downstream of the Yellow River in geography, was the cradle land of Chinese Ethnic, historically well known as the key to get the world. The "Central" in the word, not only suggests that it is geographically positioned it the middle to the early Chinese tribes, but also reflects its diversity, multi-dimensionand appropriateness in the interaction among geography, climate, biology, environment, and culture.
The area of the Central Plain had previously played a vital role in the culture exchange in China and even in East Asia. The intensification of Miaodigou Culture (the Hua Culture) and Erlitou Culture (the Xia Culture), two keys in the Chinese Primary Development, were both rooted in the Central Plain. The origin and expanding of Miaodigou type was a significant integrating and distribution of Chinese Culture, thus is seen as the earliest intensification of Hua; Erlitou Culture is widely regarded in academy as the culture of China first Empire—Xia Dynasty. Thus, the intensification of Erlitou Culture can be recognized as the intensification of Xia. The Xia's process on the basis of Hua nurtured the core "Hua Xia " of early Chinese culture, and primarily settled the frame. Therefore, it is sufficiently proved the core position of the Central Plain culture and its significance in Chinese culture.

OVERSEAS   IMPRESSION

The New and the Old of Kyoto in My Eyes.................................................................Ruan Yisan 101
In Kyoto, the highly-protected ancient capital of Japan, historical buildings and beautiful scenery can be seen everywhere. Like most cities with long history, , the historical part of Kyoto has been, to some degree, damaged in the rapid economic development, with the clashes between the traditional and the new ideas. However, the establishment and amendment of the Ancient Capital Cities Preservation Law and the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties has raised the public's awareness of protecting the historical and cultural heritage. Four featured districts have been highly protected in Kyoto, and have become famous resorts for sightseeing and touring. Nowadays, tradition is greatly valued and inherited, enabling Kyoto, the city with profound history, to maintain its historic elements. Meanwhile, the pursuit to new things has made this city more vibrant instead of exerting strong conflicts on the tradition as time goes by.
