Report of the 2011 Excavation of the Mazongshan Ancient Jade Mine Site in Subei County,Gansu

The Mazongshan Ancient Jade Mine is located in Jingbao’er Grassland near Heyan Lake,about 22 kilometers northwest of Mazongshan Town, Subei County, the Gansu Province. From October to November in 2011,Gansu Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology surveyed and excavated the site. The survey revealed that the site covers about 5 square kilometers;the excavated area is totaled 150 square meters. Excavated remains include mine pits,defensive structures,workshops,and ash pits. More than 200 objects were unearthed,including pottery,stone objects,metal objects,raw jade materials,and unfinished jades. Judging by the unearthed materials,the site was used till the Han dynasty. It is the earliest jade mine site ever discovered in Northwestern China. This excavation provides new materials to the study of the Shanma Culture. The unearthed raw jade materials are important for the study of the mineral composition and cause of formation of the Mazongshan Mine jade deposits.

A General Survey of Six Newly Restored Qinghua Bamboo Slips

After the book Bamboo Slips of the Warring States Period Collected by Qinghua University vol.I and vol.II was published, the Institute for Excavated Text Research and Preservation of Qinghua University has restored an additional 6 slips,including portions of 8 texts. Two of the texts are lost poems of the Western Zhou period,one is Zhou Gong Zhi Qin Wu (Dance to Qin Music in Zhou Gong’s Reign)of the early Zhou dynasty,and the other is the late Western Zhou Rui Liang Fu Bi (Rui Liangfu’s Words). One of the texts is the authentic early Chinese text of Shang Shu —3 sections of Shuo Ming. One is Chi Hu Zhi Ji Tang Zhi Wu (Red Swans Gathered on Tang’s House),which records the legend of Tang and Yi Yin. One is Yin Gao Zong Wen Yu San Shou (Emperor Gaozong of Yin Asking San Shou),which pur- ports to be written by Wu Ding and Peng Zu.There is also a text recording virtuous officials from the time of the Yellow Emperor to the Spring and Autunm period.It can be called Liang Chen(Excellent Officials).

Report of the 2010~2011 Excavation at the Majiayuan Cemetery of the Warring States Period in Zhangjiachuan,Gansu

After the important discovery of the Majiayuan Cemetry in 2006,excavations from 2006 to 2009 uncovered 20 tombs at the site. The fifih and sixth seasons of excavation took  place from late 2010 through the end of 2011. The five newly unearthed  burials (M18~M21, M59) were small-scale and middle -sized tombs located in the northeastern part of the cemetery. Most were stepped vertical pit tombs with side chambers.In the vertical pits,many funerary objects were unearthed,including chariots,the skulls and shank bones of cattles,sheep,horses,and so on.The No.2 chariot unearthed from M18 was decorated with lacquer,blue and purple glass beads,iron ornaments with gold foil,and bronze and silver ornaments.There were also some objects made of gold,silver,bronze,iron,pottery,and bone unearthed from the tomb. Among them,a bronze Dui,Yi,tripot hu,and basin, and a large number of lacquer ear cups are all new ware types ever unearthed in Majiayuan Cemetery. They  provide new materials for the study of the Western Rong Culture and its interaction with other cultures.
