The archaeological forum “China's New Archaeological Discoveries of 2008” was sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and undertaken by Institute of Archaeology CASS and Archaeology Press in Beijing on January 13th, 2008. Shi Jinsong, Director of the CASS Institute of Archaeology’s Archaeology Press, presided over the conference.
The Archaeological Forum was established in 2002 as an academic platform for twenty-first century Chinese archaeology. The forum provides a platform for sharing information on the latest archaeological findings and academic research. It also promotes academic exchange and encourages the development and flourishing of the archaeological profession in 21st Century China.
In order to improve the dissemination and coverage of the new archaeological findings of 2008, six important discoveries were selected from a nationwide list of archaeological digs. Archaeologists from across the country were invited to present detailed accounts of these six archaeological discoveries at the 2008 Forum.
The forum began with a presentation on the Yangguanzhai Neolithic ruins in Shaanxi’s Gaoling County by Wang Weilin, research fellow and Deputy Director of the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology. Chen Xingcan, research fellow and Deputy Director of the  Institute of Archaeology CASS, added his comments on the findings.
This was followed by a presentation on the Qijia Culture burial site at Chenqimogou in Lintan County, Gansu Province, which was given by Professor Qian Yaopeng, Head of the Department of Archaeology at Northwest University. This was supplemented with commentary from Wang Renxiang, research fellow and Director of the  Institute of Archaeology's Research Centre for Frontier Archaeology, CASS.
Min Rui, Associate Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Field Archaeology Department at the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, presented a lecture on the prehistoric ruins at Haimenkou in Jianchuan County, Yunnan Province. Professor Sun Hua, Deputy Director of Peking University's School of Archaeology and Museology added his views on these findings.

Yue Hongbin, Associate Research Fellow at the Department of Xia, Shang and Zhou Archaeology at Institute of Archaeology, CASS, gave a presentation on the Yin Dynasty Beidi ruins at Liujia Village in Anyang City, Henan Province. Wang Wei, research fellow and Director of the Institute of Archaeology, CASS, gave his appraisal of the findings.
Kang Xuhang, a Research Fellow from the Anhui Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, delivered a presentation on the Spring and Autumn Era tomb  (Tomb 1) at Shuangdun in Bengbu City, Anhui Province, followed by commentary from Professor Li Boqian, Director of the Peking University Aurora (Zhendan) Centre for the Study of Ancient Civilizations.

Dong Xinlin, Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Research Department of Han to Tang Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, CASS, gave a presentation on the Liao Era Zuling Mausoleum ruins at Bairin Zuoqi (Left Banner) in Inner Mongolia, to which Professor Qi Dongfang of Peking University's School of Archaeology and Museology added his commentary.
Nearly 300 archaeologists from different institutions joined the forum. Numerous experts and scholars participated in the discussions, creating a lively academic atmosphere in which they exchanged their scholarly viewpoints. It is clear that the organizer of the forum does not just want to show eyes catching discoveries, but also try to provide a chance for archaeologists to argue some hot issues of Chinese archaeology.                           Translated by Kelly McGuire
