The Evolution of Empires in Andean South America: A View from the Borderlands
Abstract:  During the Middle Horizon Period (ca. 600-1,000 CE), social complexity dramatically increased in the Andes.  Two polities became to dominate the region, Huari in the north and Tiwanaku in the south.  Despite great advances in archaeological research in the past decade, archaeologists still disagree about the nature of these two polities. This paper will explore whether Huari and Tiwanaku were states, empires, or just pan-Andean pilgrimage centers.  It will then explore the relationships between the two polities in the area of their borderlands and present initial results from my own excavation at the site of Millo 2 where both Huari and Tiwanaku material culture was found mixed together.
