The Archaeological Data and Archives Center, which evolved from the Archaeological Information and Archives Center, was established in 2022. Its earliest predecessor was the Library and Documentation Group, founded at the inception of the institute. In the late 1950s, a Cultural Relics Specimen Room was established, which was renamed the Library and Documentation Office in 1978 and placed under the directorship of Wang Shimin. In December 1995, the Archaeological Information and Archives Center replaced the Library and Documentation Office, on which it was based.
