Biographical Profile
Du Jinpeng, male, was born in 1957 in Ye County (present-day Laizhou City), Shandong Province. From 1976 to 1978, he worked as a teacher in primary and secondary schools in Ye County, Shandong. From 1978 to 1982, he pursued a degree in archaeology in the Department of History at Shandong University. In 1982, he began his research career at the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
He has served as the leader of the Yanshi Shang City Archaeological Team at the Institute of Archaeology, Director of the Xia-Shang-Zhou Archaeology Division, Director of the Cultural Heritage Conservation Research Center, and Research Fellow at the Institute. He also held positions as a professor at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a council member of the Archaeological Society of China, a council member of the Chinese Society for Yin-Shang Culture, and a member of the National Technical Committee for the Standardization of Cultural Heritage Protection.
Major Work
He spent 20 years conducting archaeological excavations and research at the Yanshi Erlitou site and the Yanshi Shang City site. Additionally, he participated in excavations at the Beijing Liulihe site and the Anyang Yinxu site. His primary focus is on Xia and Shang archaeology (including prehistoric archaeology), and in recent years, he has dedicated himself to the study of cultural heritage protection research.
He has been involved in several key national research projects, including the "Yanshi Erlitou Site" project under the Eighth Five-Year Plan and the compilation of Chinese Archaeology under the Ninth Five-Year Plan. He has also led specialized topics such as "Research on the Chronology and Periodization of Yanshi Shang City" under the national major scientific project "Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project," "Archaeological Research on the Origins of Ritual Systems" under the Ministry of Science and Technology's "Project to Trace the Origins of Chinese Civilization (Pilot Study)," and projects commissioned by the National Cultural Heritage Administration, such as the "Methods for Inspecting and Accepting Archaeological Excavation Projects" and "Requirements for Archaeological Work at Major Sites." He has also directed key projects, including the "Yanshi Shang City Excavation Report" under the National Social Science Fund, the major Chinese Academy of Social Sciences project "Research on Yanshi Shang City," and the Ford Foundation project "Cultural Heritage Protection and Contemporary Chinese Society." In 2008, he received the inaugural "Shi Zhangru Archaeology Memorial Award · Archaeology Award" from the Taiwan Society of Anthropology and Ethnology.
