Biographical Profile
Zhu Naicheng was born in Shanghai in February 1955, and his ancestral home is also Shanghai. He is a member of the Communist Party of China and holds a bachelor's degree.
Graduating from Sichuan University in 1977, he joined the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and was promoted to the rank of Research Fellow in 2001.
He has previously served in the following positions: Director of the Archaeological Data and Information Center of the Institute of Archaeology; Executive Editor-in-Chief of Almanac of Archaeology in China; member of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Archaeology; Member of the Editorial Boards of Archaeology and Acta Archaeologica Sinica; Council Member of the Archaeological Society of China; Secretary-General and member of the Expert Committee of the Center for the Study of Ancient Civilizations, CASS; member of the Senior Professional Titles Evaluation Committee for the Library, Archives, Cultural Heritage and Museum Series under the Ministry of Culture; and member of the Senior Professional Titles Evaluation Committee for the Library and Archives series of CASS.
Since 2018, he has been serving as the President of the Prehistoric Culture Research Branch of the Chinese Yanhuang Culture Research Association. He has held the position of Distinguished Professor at the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences since 2021.
Major Work
His research interests include the Chinese Neolithic archaeology, the origins of Chinese Civilization, the history of Chinese archaeology, and ancient Chinese jade artifacts.
He has conducted archaeological excavations and surveys in Hubei, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai and Shaanxi provinces, and participated in the excavation of such key sites as Jinan City site in Jiangling, Hubei and Guanmiaoshan site in Zhijiang. In 2004, he joined the research team of the "Project for Exploring the Origins of Chinese Civilization".
He has taken charge of compiling or serving as editor-in-chief for over 30 volumes of Almanac of Archaeology in China, more than 30 issues of Newsletter of the Center for the Study of Ancient Civilizations, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as well as over 10 academic works including A Compendium of Research on the Origins of Chinese Civilization, Jade Radiance over Longxi and Jade Artifacts from the Tomb of Fu Hao. He has published more than 100 academic papers and 4 scholarly books.
In November 1999, he delivered an academic lecture titled "Prehistoric Religious Remains Unearthed in Chinese Archaeological Discoveries" at the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University, USA. In November 2017, he gave an academic lecture entitled "The Origins of the Chinese Loong" at the Busan Marine Museum in South Korea.
He was awarded the Second Prize for Excellent Scientific Research Achievements (Senior Scholars Category) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
