Shi Jinsong

Biographical Profile

Shi Jinsong, born in July 1966 in Zhaotong, Yunnan Province. From 1986 to 1993, he studied in the Archaeology Program of the Department of History at Sichuan University. In 1996, he graduated from the Department of Archaeology at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) with a Ph.D. in History. In the same year, he joined the Institute of Archaeology, CASS. From 1999 to 2000, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Copenhagen. He was promoted to Research Fellow and appointed Director of the Editorial Department in 2005. In 2007, he became the Director of the Archaeology Magazine Press. In 2019, he was appointed Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Committee and Deputy Director of the Institute of Archaeology. In 2020, he was designated a Second-level Research Fellow. In 2023, he began receiving the Special Government Allowance from the State Council.

He currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Institute of Archaeology (Presiding over the Institute's affairs); Vice President of the Archaeological Society of China; Vice President of the China Association for Preservation of Cultural Relics and Sites (ICOMOS China); Vice Dean of the School of History at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Editor-in-Chief of Archaeology (Kaogu), Acta Archaeologica Sinica (Kaogu Xuebao), and Chinese Archaeology; and Acting Curator of the Yinxu Museum. 

Major Work

His research focus is on Shang and Zhou Dynasty archaeology, with a primary specialization in the culture and society of the Bronze Age in the Yangtze River Basin. In recent years, he has been dedicated to constructing regional histories using archaeological data and methodologies. He currently serves as the Principal Investigator for the National Key R&D Program of China: "Comprehensive Research on Core Settlements During the Key Stages of Early Chinese Civilization Development (1500 BC to 1000 BC)."
