Gong Guoqiang, born in 1962, a native of Jiangsu Province. He is a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC). From 1993 to 1995, he was a visiting scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, sponsored by the State Education Commission. He obtained a PhD in History from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in 2002. After graduating with a bachelor's degree from Nanjing University in July 1984, he joined the Institute of Archaeology, CASS, where he served successively as Research Assistant, Assistant Research Fellow, Associate Research Fellow, and Research Fellow, until his retirement in May 2022.
His previous leadership and academic positions include serving as the Leader of the Xinjiang Archaeological Team and the Xi'an Tang City Archaeological Team, the Deputy Director of the Han-Tang Archaeology Division, a Professor at the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Vice Director of the Three Kingdoms to Sui-Tang Archaeology Specialized Committee of the Archaeological Society of China, a Member of the Expert Pool of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, and a Visiting Professor at Tohoku Gakuin University, Japan.
His research focuses on the archaeological study of capital city sites from the Han and Tang dynasties in China, ancient Buddhist archaeology, and the ancient Silk Road and Sino-foreign exchange archaeology. He has led innovative research projects from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, one general project and one major thematic project from the National Social Science Fund of China. Participated in excavations at the Yan State Capital Site and cemetery at Liulihe, Beijing (Western Zhou Dynasty); the Erlitou Site in Yanshi, Henan; the Han-Jin Dynasty cemetery in Qiemo, Xinjiang; and the Sino-Japanese collaborative project at the Imperial Garden Site of the Taiyechi Pond in the Tang Dynasty's Daming Palace. He has led excavations at the Imperial Road and Danfeng Gate Site, the Office of the Secretariat Site (Zhongshusheng) , the construction and World Heritage application of the Daming Palace National Heritage Park, the Tang Chang'an East and West Markets sites, the Mingdemen Gate site, the Sui Renshou Palace - Tang Jiucheng Palace No. 4 Hall site in Linyou County, Shaanxi Province, the archaeological work for the Xi'an Beilin Museum expansion project, and the archaeological work for the expansion project of the Xi'an Railway Station and surrounding areas along the Longhai Railway.
