Liu Rui

Liu Rui was born in July 1973 in Jinzhong, Shanxi Province. He is a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology and a Master’s degree in Historical Philology from Northwest University, and a PhD in Ancient Chinese History from Fudan University. He joined the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in July 1999.
He currently serves as a Research Fellow and the Director of the Archaeological Theory Division. He is also the Team Leader of both the Epang Palace and Shanglinyuan Archaeological Team and the South China Team Ⅱ. Additionally, he is a Professor and PhD supervisor at the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
His concurrent academic positions include serving as Deputy Secretary-General of the Qin-Han Archaeology Specialized Committee and Vice Director of the Architectural Archaeology Specialized Committee of the Archaeological Society of China, Vice President of the 16th Qin-Han History Research Association of China.
He has directed and participated in archaeological projects at numerous capital cities, imperial parks, transportation networks, and hydraulic systems, including the Baita Temple in Wuwei, the hidden city gate of Yecheng, the Changhe Gate of the Han-Wei Imperial Palace City in Luoyang, the Nanyue Kingdom Palace Site in Guangzhou, as well as sites in Xi'an's such as the Epang Palace, Shanglinyuan, Yueyang City, Dongmafang, Zhongwei Bridge, the Caoqu Canal and Kunming Lake, and the Zhengguo and Bai Canals. The archaeological discoveries at the Zhongwei Bridge in 2013 and at the Yueyang City in 2017 were selected as China's Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries of their respective Years. He has authored over 160 papers in the fields of archaeology, philology, historical geography, and ancient history, completed two projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China, and currently leads one major project and one talent project under the National Social Science Fund of China, and one project under Peiyuan Program of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He also participates in one team project in rare and endangered studies funded by the National Social Science Fund of China.
